Virtual information services : ウィキペディア英語版 | Virtual information services
Virtual information services is the concept of organising and serving digital information. The authority of the organisation serving the information is the main draw. ==Development in library services== In the 1960s during the early phases of virtual information, libraries sought to expand access to print (hard copy) collections by making it easier to search and find the location for the materials. By integrating electronic information formats with conventional printed materials, libraries were amongst the first users of digital information. (See: Digital library) Early projects centered on the creation of an electronic card catalogue known as Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). By the 1980s, the success of these endeavors resulted in OPAC replacing the traditional card catalog in many academic, public and special libraries. This permitted libraries to undertake additional rewarding co-operative efforts to support resource sharing and expand access to library materials beyond an individual library. An additional advance was the growth of electronic databases of subject-specific information such as the Education Resources Information Centre (ERIC). These electronic databases became important virtual information tools for libraries because they allowed libraries to offer more materials to their patrons than just those found in the library collection and simplified the ability of patrons to quickly search for and access the information contained in the databases.
